I believe every body is unique and carries within itself a particular vision of tango that has never existed before and will never exist again. Therefore it is our purpose as dancers to discover and develop our unique individual voice so that it may contribute to the beautiful communal tapestry we call tango. 

As women in tango, we have been in the dark for most of tango’s history. Women were not “taught tango” until just a few decades ago. From the beginning tango was taught by men, to men, and the women learned kinesthetically to follow what was led. More recently women have been taking a more central role in tango and Chicas del Tango is a part of that growing wave of empowered female dancers who can, and will, chart a course to new territories of tango yet to be discovered. 

A few years ago I had an experience of dance that transcended the traditional lead/follow relationship and triggered a new state of consciousness filled with new possibilities of movement, new sensations, new ideas, even new emotions. The main ingredient - both partners know how to lead and follow. 

I believe every tango follower is primed to become an amazing leader. And having integrated both roles they can develop the skill to access this heightened dance state with a variety of dancers, within and outside of tango.

It is within this heightened, creative state that new forms of tango arise. 

The tango of 20 years from now will be different from the tango of today. The way it looks, how it is taught, how it is danced and described, will be informed by us, women, developing ourselves as dancers and as leaders (literally and figuratively) on and off the dance floor.
